ASUU Speaks On Embarking On Strike

The current status, as stated by ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke, indicates that there are no ongoing strikes by lecturers. This follows a decision supporting the government's "no work, no pay" policy, which has generated rumors. Over the years, Nigeria's public institutions have faced disruptions to their academic calendars due to strikes by academics protesting issues such as financial deficits, inadequate working conditions, and declining infrastructure.

In 2022, ASUU initiated its 16th strike in 23 years, lasting for eight months. The National Industrial Court (NIC) temporarily halted ASUU's strike in September 2022 pending a legal case. The federal government maintained its stance on the "no work, no pay" policy, and this position was upheld by the court on May 30. Despite the strike, only the teaching aspect of academic work was suspended, which the 'no work, no pay' principle failed to consider, according to Osodeke.

Reports have circulated suggesting the possibility of a new strike by the union following the court's decision. However, Osodeke dismissed these reports as "malicious and unfortunate." During the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Maiduguri on August 19, various matters were discussed, including promotion arrears. ASUU attributed discrepancies in promotion arrears to the compulsory inclusion of academics in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), which the union claims has disrupted university employment practices.

Osodeke also highlighted the negative impact of unfavorable working conditions, leading to a significant academic exodus from public universities.
