FG Announce N5Bn Palliatives For Each State, Including Food Items

The Nigerian Federal Government has declared a relief package of N5 billion for each state in the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in response to the removal of the petrol subsidy. Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State made this announcement after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja. During the meeting, Governor Zulum informed reporters that the relief funds, along with shipments of rice and grains, have been sanctioned as a short-term solution to alleviate the financial strain caused by the subsidy withdrawal. He noted that the government is simultaneously engaged in developing more sustainable strategies.

Governor Zulum revealed that the states are directed to procure 100,000 bags of rice and beans, alongside other essential items. Additionally, the NEC has tasked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with the distribution of food supplies to states sharing borders with Niger Republic. Governor Prof. Charles Soludo of Anambra State reported that efforts are underway to revise the social register.

Governor Zulum highlighted that Nigeria has been receiving refugees from Niger Republic, which has impacted the efficient allocation of relief efforts. Governor Senator Uba Sani of Kaduna State, however, pointed out that states have so far received only N2 billion out of the approved N5 billion.

The NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, transpired on Thursday.
