Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has publicly apologized to former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili following a tense confrontation with Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North.
The clash unfolded during a Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions hearing, where a fresh petition had been filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The Kogi senator has consistently accused Akpabio of intimidation, defamation, and even sexual harassment.
On Tuesday, Ezekwesili attended the hearing alongside Abiola Akiode, legal counsel for Akpoti-Uduaghan, and petitioner Zubairu Yakubu, serving as a witness in the case.
During the proceedings, tensions escalated when Nwaebonyi, who was present in defense of Akpabio, repeatedly interrupted Ezekwesili. Frustrated by the interruptions, the former minister firmly instructed Nwaebonyi to "compose himself and stop making noise" before pointedly asking, "please, will you shut up?"
The remark triggered a heated response from Nwaebonyi, who lashed out, saying, “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”
Following the incident, Akpoti-Uduaghan took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday to extend an apology to Ezekwesili, acknowledging that she bore the brunt of the heated exchange.
In her post, she expressed gratitude for Ezekwesili’s steadfast commitment to democracy, governance, and education, recognizing her as an influential figure in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
She wrote:
“Ma’am, I apologize for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us … as a mother and as a leader. Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership.”
